Exercise: Basic Wide Grip Lat (Back) Pulldown

This is one of the most common back exercises, and done correctly can really improve the look and strength of your back.

Lets break this exercise down:

What are we working?   Latissimus Dorsi, Rhomboids, Biceps Brachii, Erector Spinae, Arms, Lower Back, or in other words your back region and your biceps, along with smaller muscles in the arm.

How do I do the movement?

 1.
Using a wide bar, hold it with a wide comfortable grip light grip, while putting your knees    underneath the pad. Pull the bar down very smoothly and make sure you control the weight.
Remember to hold the lift at the bottom and squeeze your shoulder blades together.(This is called scapula adduction-abduction).

 2.  Pull the bar down smoothly until it touches the top of your chest or collar bone.

 3.  Extend your arms back to the top of the lift, back to starting position.

*REMEMBER* Every machine or cable machine in a gym can or are used to simulate a free weight   movement. In this case, It is a basic pull-up. All the fancy machines, and cables you see in your gym were created in many cases to assist a person who can or could not do the actual exercise. By using the Lat Pulldown machine, now everyone can work their back with a pull-up motion without pulling up the entire weight of their body. (now go practice your pull-ups.......have a great day!
